Alternative Provision for schools & local authorities
We welcome professional enquiries about personalised education for primary and secondary learners. Start with the purpose of the proposed placement, the learner's broad needs and the people already involved. Our team will discuss suitability and the information needed next.
Beyond Education provides AP from its Urmston centre at 171, 173 and 175 Broadway. Our wider organisation has over 30 staff and supports families, schools and local authorities across Trafford, Manchester and the North West. The provision combines academic teaching with practical activities and support for engagement.
Programmes can include the primary curriculum and selected secondary subjects, alongside cooking, baking, creative activities and life skills. The relevant combination depends on the learner, the intended outcomes and the support available. We will discuss the proposed programme before agreeing that a place is suitable.
Referrers may be seeking support for attendance barriers, access to learning, an interim educational arrangement or preparation for a transition. Please explain the educational context rather than submit only a diagnostic label. That helps us understand the work the placement would need to do.
From first discussion to an agreed start
An early conversation can establish whether it is useful to take an enquiry further. There is no need to include confidential pupil documents in the first website message. The team will explain a suitable exchange route when the relevant records are required.
1. Outline the enquiry
Share your organisation, role, adult contact details and the broad reason for seeking provision. Include the learner's stage and the approximate arrangement being considered without sending sensitive records through the initial form.
2. Discuss suitability
The team will explore strengths, barriers, current provision, learning priorities and practical needs. We can identify which additional information or conversations are necessary before deciding whether a placement can be offered.
3. Agree the details
Clarify the proposed programme, attendance pattern, funding authorisation, responsibilities, contacts and review arrangements. Confirm what is included and how any examination or transition requirements will be handled.
4. Prepare and review
Agree the introduction and start with the learner and family involved. Use the agreed communication route to discuss attendance, engagement and progress, and bring changes in needs or circumstances into the review process.
What makes a referral discussion useful?
Describe what the young person can currently access and what has helped in the past. Useful context includes their interests, communication preferences, academic starting points and the situations that have made education difficult. An account of strengths helps us consider how to begin.
Explain the intended outcomes in terms that can be reviewed. A broad aim such as re-engagement needs discussion about what that would look like for this learner. Academic work, attendance, participation and preparation for a next placement may each require different information.
If an EHCP or other agreed plan applies, identify who is coordinating it and which aspects are relevant to the proposed provision. The suitability conversation should establish responsibilities rather than assume that every need can be met by a standard AP timetable.
Attendance, communication and progress
We work with referrers and families to discuss the information they need about learning and engagement. Reporting arrangements should be agreed at commissioning, including the main contacts, expected updates and the process for a concern that cannot wait for a routine review.
Attendance arrangements need the same clarity. Confirm how absence is reported, who follows it up and how the commissioner and family receive information. A proposed timetable should be understood by everyone involved before the learner begins attending.
Where a placement is intended to support reintegration or transition, keep the receiving setting involved as appropriate. The next stage may require preparation, a gradual introduction or a change in learning priorities. Review discussion helps avoid treating the end date as a plan in itself.
Evidence for your commissioning checks
Before a placement is agreed, identify the checks your school or local authority needs to complete. Ask for the evidence relevant to the proposed programme and verify that the documents are current. Inclusion on an approval framework does not replace consideration of the individual learner’s needs.
Our policy library brings the public documents together. Supporting material that includes personal information or sensitive operational detail should be shared through an appropriate secure route, rather than published as a general download.
The precise AP approval scheme, its scope and the current supporting evidence.
Written assurance about the relevant staff suitability checks and safeguarding training.
Insurance, premises and activity risk-assessment information relevant to the placement.
Safeguarding contacts, escalation arrangements and responsibility for following up concerns.
Attendance reporting, absence follow-up, progress reviews and incident communication.
An agreed programme, timetable, funding authorisation and placement review arrangements.
An initial website enquiry only needs professional contact details and a broad outline. Do not send an EHCP, safeguarding file, medical report or individual risk assessment through a general enquiry form. Ask the team to arrange the appropriate secure exchange when documents are needed.
Before a placement begins, clarify what information is needed, who will receive it and which organisation is responsible for keeping the relevant records. Agree a contact route for a concern that cannot wait for a scheduled meeting. Attendance and progress information should reach the people responsible for monitoring the placement.
Beyond Education is registered on Ofsted’s Childcare Register under EY555760. This is not a graded school inspection outcome. Consider this registration in its correct context and request the separate information relevant to the AP arrangement you are evaluating.
Jess and Mel are the organisation’s co-directors. The AP team includes primary and secondary leads, safeguarding leads and SEND leads. Confirm the named contacts and availability for the proposed placement, including who takes responsibility when a usual contact is absent.
Ask for the complaints procedure and the escalation route relevant to your commissioning arrangement. A safeguarding concern needs the direct safeguarding route and must not wait through ordinary complaint stages. Costs, funded hours, start dates and reviews require individual agreement; an enquiry does not reserve a place or confirm payment responsibility.
You do not need to have everything worked out. Give us a few details and we can discuss the right next step.
For now, please use the adult's contact details and a year group. Leave out children's full names, medical records, EHCPs and confidential safeguarding information.
Can we make an exploratory enquiry without sharing pupil records?
Yes. Give us adult professional contact details, the learner's broad stage and the purpose of the proposed provision. The team can discuss whether further assessment is appropriate and explain how detailed information should be exchanged securely if the enquiry progresses.
Do you accept both school and local-authority enquiries?
Yes. Our AP brochures describe working with schools, SENDCos and local authorities. Please clarify which organisation is coordinating the referral and which party would authorise and fund the placement. That avoids uncertainty when discussing the programme and a possible start.
Can reporting be discussed before commissioning?
Yes. Explain the information your organisation needs, the intended outcomes and any required review process. The team will discuss what can be provided and agree communication arrangements. Do not assume a particular reporting frequency or format until it has been confirmed.
Are transport and examination entries automatically included?
Do not assume they are. Any transport, collection, qualification entry or examination-centre requirements must be discussed explicitly and responsibility agreed. Tuition in a subject does not by itself create an examination entry or guarantee that every related arrangement is included.
Where can we obtain the current policies?
Contact the office and explain which documents your commissioning process requires. We can direct the request to the relevant person and discuss current safeguarding contacts. Please use the approved versions supplied for the placement rather than rely on an undated copy from elsewhere.
Discuss a possible placement
Tell us your organisation, role and the broad support being sought. We will arrange the next conversation with the AP team.
