Trafford 11+ preparation, with your child in mind

Choosing a secondary school can bring plenty of questions. At Beyond Education Tutoring, we help children prepare for grammar school entrance exams by developing their English, maths and reasoning skills, while helping parents understand the preparation process.

Finding the Right Starting Point

The first step is to understand which schools you are considering and the year your child would enter Year 7. Different schools have different admissions arrangements, so it’s important to check the correct requirements for your child’s intake year.

The five-school Trafford Grammar School Consortium includes Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School. Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College have separate admissions arrangements, which families should check directly.

Our free entrance assessment and advice service gives a tutor the opportunity to work with your child, understand their current ability and recommend a suitable starting point. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and discuss the preparation options available.

11+ Tuition and Home Practice

Our entrance exam preparation helps children develop the skills needed for their intended assessment. Depending on the programme and their learning needs, this can include English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

Our entrance exam groups use 55-minute sessions with a tutor-to-pupil ratio of 1:5. We’ll explain the current timetable and available options so you can decide what works best for your child.

Home practice can include reading, discussing unfamiliar vocabulary and revisiting number skills. A child needs to understand why an answer works before speed becomes the focus. If a task repeatedly causes difficulty, let the tutor know rather than simply repeat the same exercise without support.

Regular practice at home can also help children build their vocabulary, strengthen number skills and become more familiar with different question types. We encourage understanding first, so children know why an answer works rather than simply memorising methods.

Parents receive written feedback following group sessions, with the option to arrange a more in depth conversation with the tutor through our office.

Understanding the Latest Trafford 11+ Changes

Entrance exam arrangements can change between intake years, so it’s important to check the latest information before choosing resources or planning preparation.

The consortium has published changes to its test arrangements for future entry years. The test provider, content and timing may differ depending on when your child will enter Year 7, while schools outside the consortium follow their own admissions processes.

Our [Trafford 11+ admissions guide] can help you find further information and official school links. Always check the relevant school’s admissions information for current registration deadlines, test arrangements and access arrangements.

We recommend discussing preparation early. Our entrance booklet advises beginning no later than September of Year 5, but the right timeline will depend on your child’s intake year and the applicable test arrangements.

Make the experience more familiar

Mock exams give children practice with working independently, listening to instructions and using time in an assessment setting. The most useful part is what comes afterwards: understanding which areas need further teaching and which exam habits would benefit from practice.

A mock result is a snapshot, not a promise of a place. Test performance, published admissions criteria and the allocation process are separate matters. Meeting a qualifying standard does not by itself guarantee admission to a particular school.

Talk to us if your child is becoming worried about preparation or is reluctant to continue. Their experience matters. We can discuss the pace, the work being set and the questions you may want to raise with the schools you are considering.

A few useful answers

Your questions, answered.

Does Beyond Education register my child for the actual entrance test?

No. Parents or carers must follow the relevant school's registration instructions and deadlines. Tuition and mock bookings are separate. Keep a record of your test registration and check that you have received any confirmation required by the school or test provider.

Is the same test used by all Trafford grammar schools?

The five consortium schools share a testing process. Loreto Grammar and St Ambrose College have their own arrangements. Always check the current admissions policy for each school you are considering, including any eligibility and oversubscription criteria, rather than assume one registration covers every route.

Will older GL practice books suit a child taking the FSCE test?

Some underlying English and maths skills overlap, but older materials should not be treated as a complete guide to the new format. Check the official familiarisation information for the intended entry year and discuss suitable practice with the tutor before buying a large set of books.

Does a qualifying score guarantee a school place?

No. Achieving the required test standard and receiving a place are different stages. The school's published admissions criteria and the allocation process determine places. Read the relevant policy and take individual admissions questions to the school or local authority.

Can we book mocks without assuming our child will pass?

Yes. The purpose is practice and information to guide learning. We do not use a mock booking or result to guarantee a future outcome. Tell us your child's intake year and preparation experience so staff can discuss an appropriate sitting and current availability.
