Mock exams: practice with a purpose

A mock exam gives children a chance to experience an assessment before the real day. It can make instructions, independent work and timing more familiar, while showing where future preparation would be useful.

More than a score at the end

A child may know a topic in a familiar lesson and find it harder to use that knowledge under exam conditions. A mock creates an opportunity to practise a different kind of task: listening carefully, beginning without individual prompting and deciding how to use the time available.

It also provides information for the next stage of learning. Some errors point to a topic that needs teaching; others may come from overlooking an instruction, misreading a word or spending too long on one question. Those patterns are more useful than treating the overall score as a prediction.

We discuss suitability before a booking is confirmed. Tell us the intended school intake year, the preparation your child has done and any concerns about sitting a paper. The aim is a useful experience, rather than putting a child into an assessment for which the format or level is unsuitable.

Choose a sitting for the right intake

Trafford entrance arrangements are changing, so the name of a test provider or a familiar practice book is not enough to identify the right mock. Staff need to know the year your child would enter secondary school and the schools you are considering.

Ask which skills and question types the proposed sitting covers, how long the session lasts and what feedback is included. We will confirm the practical details before you book. Mock dates and availability should be checked with the office; an enquiry is not a reservation or a confirmed place.

Our mocks are a preparation service from Beyond Education. They are separate from official school entrance tests and school admissions decisions. Schools and their appointed providers publish the authoritative information about the actual assessment and registration process.

Helping your child know what to expect

A simple explanation can help: this is a chance to practise and find out what to work on next. Children do not need to see every mock as a verdict on whether they belong at a particular school. Keep the conversation grounded in the experience and the learning it can support.

Check the arrival time, collection arrangements and equipment instructions supplied for the sitting. If your child has an access need or is worried about an aspect of the session, contact the team in advance so it can be discussed before the day.

Avoid assuming that an adjustment made for a mock automatically applies to an official entrance test. Schools and test providers have their own processes and deadlines. Ask the relevant school what evidence or request is needed and keep that separate from your conversation with us.

  • Confirm the correct sitting and arrival details.
  • Discuss any practical needs before the day.
  • Explain that mistakes will help guide preparation.
  • Leave time to arrive without rushing.

Use the feedback to choose the next task

After a mock, give your child time to describe the experience. What felt familiar? Which parts were difficult to understand? Did they feel able to move on when stuck? Their account adds context to the written work and can help identify a useful change.

When reviewing feedback, separate subject knowledge from exam habits. A vocabulary gap may call for reading and discussion; a calculation error may need a method revisited; unfinished questions may suggest a need to practise pacing. The same score can hide very different learning needs.

Ask the team how the feedback should inform tuition or practice at home. Choosing a few priorities is usually more manageable than trying to correct every mistake at once. Allow time for teaching and practice before expecting a later assessment to show a change.

We do not publish invented pass rates or use a mock result to guarantee an entrance-test outcome. Each sitting captures performance on particular tasks on a particular day. The official test and admissions criteria remain separate.

Arrange a mock through the Urmston team

Contact Beyond Education with your child's year group and intended entry year. Let us know whether they already attend tuition here. We can discuss the current mock programme, available dates and any preparation that would help make the sitting useful.

Staff will explain the fee, what is included and the booking arrangements before confirming a place. Please do not make travel plans around an unconfirmed date or assume a date used by another family applies to your child. The office is the point of contact for changes and questions.

If you are still deciding whether entrance preparation is right for your child, a free primary assessment and advice conversation may be the better first step. That gives us time to consider their starting point before recommending a mock or a regular programme.

A few useful answers

Your questions, answered.

Where can I find the next mock dates?

Please ask the office for the current schedule and available places. Tell us the intended intake year so we can identify the relevant sittings. A date or time is only confirmed when staff have replied with the booking details for your child.

Is a mock an official Trafford entrance test?

No. It is a practice assessment arranged by Beyond Education. Parents must register separately for official school tests using the relevant admissions process. A mock does not count towards a grammar-school application and does not replace any school requirement.

What if my child has never sat an exam before?

Tell us when you enquire. Familiarisation is one purpose of a mock, but suitability depends on the child and the proposed format. The team can explain the experience and discuss whether an assessment or further teaching would be a better first step.

Can mock results predict admission?

They can inform preparation but cannot guarantee a result or a place. Performance can vary, and school allocation also depends on published admissions criteria. Use feedback to identify useful learning priorities rather than treat one score as a definitive forecast.

What happens if we cannot attend?

Contact the office as soon as possible. Ask for the terms that apply to the particular mock booking before reserving a place, including the arrangements for changes or cancellation. Do not assume the regular tuition subscription terms are identical to a separate mock event.
